The Department for Transport has approved funding for accessibility improvements at Dorchester South Railway Station. This significant investment will enhance the travel experience for all passengers, particularly those with disabilities or mobility challenges.
The announcemnet this week confimred an agreed list of 50 additional stations across England, Scotland, and Wales, including Dorchester South. This expansion is in addition to existing stations already benefiting from Access for All (AfA) funding or other accessibility initiatives.
The funding for these station projects—totaling £350 million—was confirmed following the reallocation of funds from the High-Speed Two (HS2) project. The Access for All programme was launched in 2006 to address the challenges faced by disabled passengers and those with mobility restrictions when using railway stations. By making stations more accessible, the aim is to create a more inclusive and convenient travel experience for everyone.
Dorchester Chamber President Steve Bulley said:
“I am delighted that Dorchester South Railway Station will benefit from this funding. It’s a positive step toward a more inclusive rail transport hub in the county town.
“Railway stations need to accessible to all passengers and this funding will make a real difference in the lives of those who rely on our rail services to and from Dorchester.”
