Dorchester Almshouses is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), providing almshouse accommodation for local people, who meet our criteria for appointment. The charity is an amalgamation of 3 charities, Chubb, Whetstone and Napper’s Almshouses, created in Dorchester during the 17th century.
The charity currently holds 26 1-bedroom flats in the centre of Dorchester, next to the Borough Gardens.
The Board of Trustees consists of up to 13 local people, 2 of who are nominated by the Town Council and the Mayor of Dorchester is an honorary member in recognition of the historical connection between the charity and Dorchester, with the remaining appointed trustees having special knowledge of the town.
The small staff team manages the daily running of the almshouses, supporting our residents, trustees and taking care of our sites.
We are registered with the Regulator of Social Housing and the Charity Commission and are members of the Housing Ombudsman Service and The Almshouse Association.
